Still hanging in Catalina

We’re still hanging out in Avalon, Catalina. This last week has been nice, although we can’t believe that it has already been a week. Michael didn’t end up with a cold, he has been plagued with a stomach flu all week which hasn’t made it much fun for him on the boat (he promises it’s not seasickness!), but we’ve been trying to relax as much as possible. We had a wonderful BBQ on the boat with Chad & Renee on Wednesday and on Thanksgiving Day, we went out to dinner with Renee, Chad, & Renee’s family: Robert, Bob, & Jackie. The rest of the weekend has included a lot of the same; resting, reading, chores on the boat, laundry, dinghying back and forth to the dinghy dock twice a day just to let Casey do his ‘business’. We’re surprised how fast time is going on a daily basis.

We’ve read that every boater has one piece of equipment on board that is troublesome from the get-go. Well…..ours is definitely the generator. After having it working for about 5 days, all of a sudden one morning the battery that it uses to start was mostly dead. That’s pretty bizarre, since it’s supposed to charge the batteries! But for some reason it’s not charging it’s ‘own’ battery. We have a jump-start device on board and was able to give it some charge to get it started. However, after charging for only 30 minutes, it just shut down. We ran down to take a look and couldn’t figure out why it shut down, but in playing with it, it seemed to shut itself down entirely, even the fuel pump didn’t work. After about 15 minutes, it seemed that it was OK again so we left it alone, figuring it must have overheated. The next day we started it again and it lasted 10 minutes before shutting down again. Oh great, now what?! We left it alone again for a couple days, both of us reading every piece of literature on the generator. And suddenly, Michael figured it out….since the generator wasn’t charging it’s own battery…..the battery that ran the fuel pump, it wasn’t able to sustain itself while running. A-HA!! It’s all crystal clear now. Of course, this was probably Saturday before we had this realization…..and now it’s Monday and we’re just getting around to developing a temporary workaround. You see we’ve just been SO busy….we haven’t had a chance to make some changes. All seems well with the generator now…..until next time!

Of course we have had other items that have not functioned as well as we had hoped. You see, the purpose of the shakedown cruises, that we haven’t been able to take, is to make as much stuff ‘break’ as possible so you can fix it better for the next cruise. Although we haven’t had many things break, we have been successful in making a pretty good list of items to improve or fix. One item is our dinghy oar pads. The pads hold your dinghy paddles and make it easy to row the dinghy. One night, after leaving our dinghy at the dinghy dock, we came back to find one of our oars inside the dinghy, with the pad missing. Oh great, now we had one oar, and one paddle! O-well….we’ll get it replaced, no problem. Then one evening while we were trying to tie up at the dinghy dock, Michael was leaning on the other oar pad and POP, it popped right off. So now we have two paddles! J We’re also looking at adding a secondary, separate charger to the boat, which will just add to the redundancy and make our charging system more secure. These items have been added to the list I mentioned previously.

We have had a great time with Renee & Chad this week. We’ve had a BBQ, Thanksgiving Dinner, and Saturday we went over to help put up Christmas lights & decorations. Chad slaved away in the kitchen cooking up a fabulous spaghetti dinner, even separating out some sauce to keep the mushrooms & black olives out of my sauce, while Michael & I worked with the lights to make sure they were all lit. Renee was taking the working lights and putting them up along with the Christmas decorations throughout the house. It was great….some holiday music, hot buttered rum, & wonderful friends. That evening we attempted to watch Polar Express, but noticed outside the wind was howling! Michael & I got a bit worried and decided to head down to the boat. Not only was it windy, but a swell has rolled in from the west and inside the bay, the swells were bouncing off all of the walls which made for a very confused sea. Our boat was in between two power boats, which were bobbing like corks. Chad came down and we checked out our gear and it appeared we would be fine for the night so we hunkered down for the night. Since Michael has had a bad stomach this week, he has found that he prefers to sleep in the futon-style berth in the main salon as the motion doesn’t aggravate his stomach as much. So he slept out there, and I slept in the aft stateroom. We were rocking pretty good and the wind would come up and blow us around. The next day we overheard that the wind was a consistent 25 and gusted to above 50 during the night. Since we were in two separate areas of the boat, we each got up every two hours or so to check on everything, but each during different times of the night. Every time I got up to check everything out, Michael was snoozing, and he said the same for me. We didn’t have any problems, but sure heard some new moans and groans from the boat!

Our buddy boat, Dolphin, arrived at the Isthmus on Friday morning and dinghy’d down to Avalon to greet us. They were hanging out there and planned on coming into Avalon later in the day, however, Harbor Patrol told them it was full, so they hung out there until Saturday. They moored but were put at the very edge of the harbor, so they were really knocked around that night, often rolling rail to rail. They didn’t have a very good night – and even worse, they decided to leave their dinghy at the dinghy dock because it would get beat up if they kept it at the boat. During the night, Harbor Patrol moved all of the dinghy docks, dinghys attached, to a mooring until the storm passed. So when they awoke the next morning and looked for their dinghy – not only was the boat missing, but so was the dock! They were relieved to see it later after Harbor Patrol put everything back in place. We had a BBQ aboard their boat last night and headed out shortly after to San Diego last night.

Yesterday, Renee & Chad invited us for a ride to the Airport in the Sky for lunch. We jumped into the Explorer and headed up through the Conservancy to the Airport. We had a great lunch there and then continued exploring the island, driving the dirt roads through the equestrian center, stopping every once in a while for some great pictures. It was so clear we could see the mainland 26 miles away. The sky was a gorgeous blue and the water was crystal. We even saw some buffalo! We made our way to Shark’s Cove and did a little flip-flop hiking over to another cove. We sat and watched the waves as they crashed in and some surfers desperately trying to catch one of them. We could have sat there all day, lost in our own thoughts. We headed back and came to the Eagle Sanctuary. They house & rehabilitate Eagles on the island and release them when they’re ready. Renee estimates there are between 50 and 100 eagles that are living on the island now. At the sanctuary, there was one Eagle, sitting up in clear view for us to see. We tried taking photos, but they may not come out very well. They sure are beautiful birds. We had a wonderful time and are grateful to Renee & Chad for the tour.

Today we’re hanging out on the boat – Michael has fiddled with the generator and we’re running it and charging the batteries today. He’s reading “Islands, Oceans, & Dreams” by a local Channel Islands Harbor author, Michael Salvaneschi, while I’m writing the updates. I’ve been reading Freakonomics, which has been a fun book. I hope this wasn’t too long of an update! We’ll write more later….Rene & Michael

We're on our way!

Yippee! We've left Channel Islands Harbor and are now sitting on a mooring in Avalon, Catalina Island. Chad Butler, a great friend and our rigger, came over to the boat Monday night for dinner (Michael made a wonderful taco salad) and we decided we'd take a short snooze, wake up at midnight, and take off. We headed to bed around 8pm and slept until midnight. After doing some of the last minute tasks: taking Casey for his walk, removing the sail covers, preparing the sail sheets, we headed out of the harbor at approx 12:30am. It was a beautiful night - calm seas, less than 10 knot wind, popcorn clouds & a ½ moon to light the way. We headed out of the harbor and turned into the wind (coming from shore) & started putting up the main sail. It kept getting stuck on the lazy-jack system we had in place and we ended up with Michael & Chad at the main mast monkeying with the sail & bungees until the lazy jacks finally lost. The sail finally went up with we turned around again heading for the shipping lanes. Then it was time for the mizzen sail - it went up with no problem….but somehow one of the flag clips managed to attach itself to the backstay. Since the flag halyard was attached to the boom, it prevented the boom from moving…..hahaha!! Well, the flag halyard was removed from the boom and everything was fine. We motor-sailed across the shipping lanes and made a turn for Catalina Island. We hadn't performed the sea-trial portion of our autopilot yet so we took a quick 15 minutes, let the system figure the rudder out, and set it. We let the autopilot steer the rest of the way to Avalon until we get about a mile in. The 3 of us were up from midnight to 3am and we let Michael have the 1st round of sleep as he wasn't feeling too good. He slept, or rested, until approx 6am. The sunrise was spectacular and seas were still nice and calm. Chad & I went below to snooze around then & I managed to sleep until around 9am. I went above to find both Michael & Chad on watch & HUNGRY! I made bagels & cream cheese, with some OJ….yummy! The rest of the sail in was uneventful and we pulled into the harbor around 12:30. Harbor Patrol gave us slip # 219 and we moored without incident.

As soon as we arrived, Michael took Casey to shore and let him relieve himself. He didn't want to go potty on deck and his eyes were floating!! Chad & I put the sail covers on and when Michael returned, we had a toast to a successful trip.

Chad was preparing to go ashore as his girlfriend, Renee, lives in Avalon and not 5 minutes before leaving, he went down the companion steps and Casey just happened to be laying down there - he stepped on him, then did whatever he could to avoid stepping on him again, which unfortunately, included breaking a toe or two. Ouch!! He shook it off and got off the boat as quickly as he could. Hahaha…..

Michael was utterly exhausted as he wore himself out in the last week stressing, working on the boat, worrying about everything with the shop, making the arrangements, etc. We think he may have had a touch of a cold. We ate a big sandwich lunch at 3pm and fiddled around on the boat. We went ashore with Casey and walked around a bit just before sunset. After coming back to the boat, we loaded Michael up with vitamin C, took showers, and pulled out the movie Club Paradise to watch. All fresh-n-clean, with fresh shorts on, Michael noticed the dinghy was a little too far away the boat and went up to inspect. Somehow, we're still dumbfounded to how it happened, the carabineer clip came un-done and the dinghy was floating away. Luckily, it was just at our stern, but he had to jump into the nice cold water and retrieve it. We re-tied it up, this time with a safety line, and he took another shower to rinse all of the salt off. I'm pretty sure he lasted a whole 5 minutes into the movie before crashing asleep for 12 hours.

Today we've been doing a lot….Michael washed down the boat this morning with salt water, ran the generator, ran the water maker, took Casey ashore, & made notes on what items we noted during our sail last night: separate the deck lights from the 3-way light above the mast, remove the flag clip from the backstay (which he did today), re-do the lazy-jack system, cut & re-tie the main sheet traveler, a screw is missing on the mizzen track, fix the light on the engine panel that dead-shorts the RPM meter when it's on, figure out why the compass light didn't come on, label the rope clutches, add another red light by the radios and possibly one in the V Berth. This afternoon he rested & relaxed. Rene made breakfast, made Michael take her & Casey for a dinghy ride through the harbor, read a book, did dishes, straightened up a bit, worked on the update & completed the log book, made lunch, & fiddled around. Sounds like fun, huh? J This evening Chad, Renee & her family is coming on board for a BBQ dinner. We're looking forward to chilling out the next few days. Today has been a little overcast, but still 72° and beautiful.

Dolphin, our buddy boat is still working to get out of Channel Islands Harbor. They were still working hard to get out by Thursday and over here by Friday.

We'll write more later. Thanks for checking in! Rene & Michael

Ready as we will be

The subject says it all - we're as ready as we can be. The generator is fixed: our power share was set too high, we did our last minute provisioning - including Pepsi & Tecate for Chad, our stowaway, Sue's book is returned, everything is strapped down and ready to go tonight. Michael is utterly exhausted and looks like he's been run over by a bus. He hasn't been sleeping, thinks he has a cold, is very anxious, & has said many times that this better be worth it! I'm sure it will be….I can't wait!! We'll write more….Rene & Michael

We're trying to get out of here!

Geez, leaving sure is hard! I'm sure I've said this before, but this is hard work!! Just finishing those last-minute projects and getting everything settled takes a long time. We've been so busy this last week checking those items off of the list. Yesterday was a VERY productive day….Michael worked with Brad Johnson from Sojourn Marine and got the 2nd Inverter installed, the Jerry cans strapped down to some HUGE pieces of teak compliments of our very good friend Tom Holladay, the dive compressor attached to the deck - that thing isn't going anywhere!! We have most of the loose stuff put away inside the boat, just a couple boxes of stuff (mostly my cookbooks) that we're scratching our heads on where to put. Our plan is still to take off early Tuesday morning approx 2-4am and head over to Catalina. We'd like to spend Thanksgiving in Catalina with Chad & his girlfriend's family. We may have a stowaway on board, but that plan may change, we'll find out at the end of the weekend. We have checked most of the stuff off of the 'must be done before we leave' list, although we ran into a little problem with the generator yesterday….grrrrr!! We're working on it today though and I'm confident it'll work out fine.

Santa Ana's are a blowing now and have been off and on all week. It's nice and warm….just a bit windy. The weatherman says that they should stop tomorrow.

So what's remaining….
1. Finalizing the Coast Chandlery arrangements while we're away. Casey, our manager, is learning very quickly and Michael has been trying to help him anyway he can. This includes handling all of those outstanding items we haven't dealt with in the last couple months. Michael's Dad has picked up the back end of the business very well and we're confident leaving it in his hands.
2. CalFed still hasn't come through with the forged check from Rene's stolen purse episode, so we can't close the account until that happens. This might be left over to take care of next year when we return for the summer.
3. Figuring out what's wrong with the generator.
4. Last minute provisioning
5. Rene hasn't returned Sue Chenoweth's book that was lent to her
6. Strapping down everything else on deck & below that we haven't managed to get tied down yet: scuba tanks, dock cart, boarding ladder, etc.

We're being encouraged by our friends Scott & Liz who are in Mazatlan. Every day we receive an e-mail letting us know they're thinking of us! We can't wait to get down there to see them. Mike, Hutch, & Betsy on our buddy-boat, Dolphin, are also working very hard to leave. They are moving onto the boat today and should be ready to leave with us, with any luck.

I'll write more later….Rene & Michael

Worse than provisioning….putting it all away!

We’ve spent the last 3 days arranging, re-arranging, and re-arranging again all of the stuff that has made it onto the boat in the last week. This may sound like no big deal, but it has been challenging, to say the least. It’s kinda like putting a pillow into a shoe box….hahaha! See, all that great stuff we picked up at Sam’s club had to be re-packaged to get rid of all of the cardboard that melts aboard a boat, which took a bit of time, then we had to find spots for it to fit. The cruising books say to allow 3 trips to complete your provisioning for the trip. We did all of the dry stuff, the ‘staples’ if you will at Sam’s Club and have about 95% of it put away now. We still have a trip to Trader Joe’s, still need to get some frozen meats at Von’s, and have the Farmer’s Market this weekend to pickup all of our fresh produce just before we leave. We’ve had a lot of people ask us how to figure out what to take, and how much to take of it. Again, the cruising books say to make a list of your 5 favorite breakfasts, 10 favorite lunch & snacks, & 20 favorite dinners. Once you have the list, make a list of the ingredients and then provision using that list of ingredients as a grocery list. We’ve stocked up on a ton of stuff, right or wrong. To figure out where we put it, and how much we have, we’ve made lists & labels for each bin, cabinet, refrig & freezer area. Other than that, we’ve been picking up some final items, working with Casey up at the shop, and getting those projects done. We had rain last night & most of today so we ran errands – storage, cell phone changes, shopping, Mp3 player parts, etc. We disconnected Rene’s cell phone today, so if you’re trying to get in touch with either of us, call 805-701-8384. Tomorrow is project day – getting some of those projects DONE! Chad, the rigger is also coming over tomorrow to finish up tuning the rig. Woohoo….we’re sooooo close!! I’ll write more later…..Rene & Michael

Back to work

After living it up on Saturday at the party, we took a day off on Sunday and relaxed! We did some cleanup and a little organization, but mostly rested. It was a beautiful day, but no rest for the wicked. Monday morning we started again with the lists, provisioning, & work. The parts for the generator came in late Monday and we moved the provisions from Michael's Dad's garage down to the boat. The generator mechanic, Jason, came over Tuesday and after working all day....it was still sucking water into the cylinder. So, now we have a new head, cylinder, rings, springs, and everything else under the sun on order to replace. We hope to have the parts on Friday, and hopefully Jason will come over on either Friday or Saturday. We'll see. Chad, the rigger, is working on the boat today and we'll have the Mizzen sail tuned and most everything else done today. He'll go on a sail with us after the generator is put back together and try to loosen up the rig so he can do a final tune on it before we leave. Right now we have all of the engine room tore up so that Jason can work on the generator, and all of that 'stuff' from the engine room is everywhere on the boat. We also have the provisions still in the original boxes and they're taking up all the rest of the room on the boat. Right now we don't have any room to sit, and walking through the boat requires some coordination! Still here in Channel Islands.....will write more later. Rene & Michael
